Different categories of computers use a wide variety of operating systems (OS), with different OS families having a majority on different platforms.

The usage share of operating systems is the percentage of the operating systems used in computers.
Let’s take a look on which variety of operating systems (OS) dominates what Category of Computers


Computer Category : Desktop and laptop computers
Dominant OS : Windows
Market Share : ~90%


Microsoft Windows (or simply Windows) is a metafamily of graphical operating systems developed, marketed, and sold by Microsoft. The Total Market Share for Windows OS in Desktop and laptop computers Category is almost 90%, Windows consists of several families of operating systems. among all Windows 7 alone makes up 41% of market share of total 90% share of Windows

Windows 7 was released in 2009 by Microsoft as a successor for Windows Vista it soon went on to become most used operating system for Desktop and laptop computers till date.

It was succeeded by Windows 8 three years later in 2012, and then Windows 8.1 was released in 2013 and then Windows 10 in 2015, even after 3 new versions of windows after Windows 7, Windows 7 still remains as most used OS for Desktop and laptop computers with a Market Share of 40.23% (Dec 2016 by StatCounter).

Android is a mobile operating system developed by Google, based on the Linux kernel and designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones

Android was first released in 2008 with the name “Android Alpha”, soon Android went on to become most used Operating System for Smartphone's and Tablet Computers with almost 68% of Market Share.

Google says that over 1.3 million Android smartphoness are sold every day. Most are running Android making it the most popular mobile operating system. It is also the most popular operating system in general.
There are over 1,600,000 apps available for Android.


Computer Category : Super Computers
Dominant OS : Linux
Market Share : ~97%


Linux is a operating system assembled under the model of free and open-source software development and distribution, first released in 1991.

Linux is the most used operating system for Super  Computers, as of July 2016 Linux makes up to 99% usage share of TOP500 Super Computers.


Although most modern supercomputers use the Linux operating system, each manufacturer has its own specific Linux-derivative, and no industry standard exists, partly due to the fact that the differences in hardware architectures require changes to optimize the operating system to each hardware design.
